Everything No One Told Me About Kindergarten
Big never went to kindergarten. I kept her home with me and she went straight into first grade. Getting Sissy ready for her first day was nerve wracking for me. I had a TON of questions but not a lot of answers. We both survived that first day. She did amazing! Me...not so much. But she and I have had some new experiences that I thought I would share with you.

Pre KindergartenSissy's school wanted her to know certain things before she even started. Luckily we had already been working on them, but it would have been helpful to know what we SHOULD have been working on.
Supply ListHere is a copy of Boo's kindergarten supply list. I was disappointed that all the supplies were dumped into paper bags and then redistributed to the children. I had specifically bought certain items for Boo to use, like washable markers and washable glue.

Color DaysWe had been in school for 4 days when I received a note that her school was doing a school spirit "Color Week". Each student was supposed to dress in a specific color for a week. Monday was Red, Tuesday was Orange, Wednesday was Yellow, Thursday was Green, and Friday was Blue. This wasn't a big deal for us. Boo likes to wear a variety of colors, but for some families, having a shirt in every different color might have been a challenge.

MealsHer school provides breakfasts and lunches. Breakfast costs $1 and lunches cost $2. I received a packet explaining that the school can provide reduced cost meals to the child if the family qualifies and how to apply. Her school also participates in an online account system. Once you register, you can add money online and also monitor how their lunch card was used.
HomeworkSissy had homework from the very first day of school. I was surprised, but I support it. She is supposed to read or be read to for 15 minutes at least 5 days a week. She has a reading log in her folder that gets initialed. She also has a behavior sheet that lets me know how she was that day, because the "Nothing" and "Fine" stage has already started. Her teacher has already told me that in a couple of weeks, she will be bringing home a weekly homework packet. It will come home on Monday and should be returned on Friday.
Super Special MeBoo has her first project. It is a book called "Super Special Me". I will include the pages, if you want to do one with your little one. The sentence is written across the bottom of the page and she is supposed to decorate the top part of the page. She brought it home on a Monday and has to return it the following Monday. She also needs to present her book to the class.
